Managing Director, Shanghai

James W. Robinson is managing director of APCO Worldwide's Shanghai office where he counsels and supports corporate, nonprofit and government clients on communications, government relations, corporate affairs and sustainability issues. His clients are frequently seeking support in developing their China strategies; accelerating growth in the market; navigating the often complex government and regulatory environment; managing public affairs and perception issues; and supporting ambitious entities looking to “Go Global.”  In addition to leading APCO’s team of more than 30 people in Shanghai, he is a member of the firm’s Greater China management team.

Formerly, Mr. Robinson was based in New York for more than a decade, where he led APCO’s trailblazing global sustainability and purpose practice. In New York, he was client leader for several of APCO’s most significant global assignments, supporting public affairs campaigns, stakeholder and issues management efforts, communications initiatives, and sustainability reporting programs. He has led several award-wining client campaigns and in 2016 was named to PR Week’s “40 Under 40” list of leaders in the communications industry. Since 2008, he has led the firm’s work for the Clinton Global Initiative. He has frequently spoken about the evolving role of business in society and the opportunities presented by innovative partnerships. He also served on the firm’s North America leadership team.

Prior to joining the New York office, Mr. Robinson served within the investment and government relations practice of APCO’s Beijing office. In that role, he advised multinationals looking to enter the China market and helped clients expand their China presence through government and public affairs programs. He also managed marketing and business development functions for APCO's China presence.

Mr. Robinson also spent a year in APCO's office in Indonesia, where he focused on servicing clients from the extractive industries. He advised multinational energy companies on external affairs and conducted a major study into the macroeconomic impact of a major gas reserve in Indonesia’s West Papua province. Additionally, he worked with international clients on investor, media and government relations campaigns.

Mr. Robinson graduated with both a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in Oriental (China) studies from the University of Cambridge and speaks Mandarin proficiently. He served as chairman of the Oxford and Cambridge Alumni Club in Beijing and continues to participate in several business and Asia-related professional and cultural organizations.
